This job involved replacing a multipoint locking mechanism on a uPVC door with ‘non-standard’ dimensions in Hayle. The homeowner was experiencing difficulty locking the door, they stated that at first they thought it was the handle set spring cassettes as they had broken. Then as time progressed the mechanism became stiffer until it eventually seized up. The homeowners said they had tried to source a new handle set themselves but couldn’t find anything with compatible dimensions.
Failed Mechanism – Seized Gearbox

We attended the property in Hayle, assessed the existing lock and found that there was a major issue with the gearbox inside – on inspection the mechanism was identified as a Millenco which is notorious for having niche centres hence the struggle to find replacement handles at usual suppliers.
‘Most’ mechanisms have 92mm centres (pz) with Millenco’s have the slight deviation of 95mm centres (pz) and are a ‘1 piece’ mechanism rather that have detachable elements to them. Usually you could just change the gearbox in this situation but even though the faceplate can be unscrewed, this Millenco gearbox cannot be swapped with a replacement as it is connected to the linkage rail that runs behind the faceplate.
As prepared locksmiths, we carry overnight locks to use as a temporary substitute to allow the door to remain secured while we take away the old mechanism and order a new one – as Millenco’s have these niche centres a standard overnight lock may not retrofit the morticed areas of the UPVC door. At Key Turn Locksmiths we stock overnight locks that can facilitate these niche sizes so this isn’t an issue, avoiding widening or creating additional holes in the door.
The Solution - New Mechanism
We carried out a like-for-like multipoint lock replacement that restored full security and smooth operation. The handle set was also fit with two brand new spring cassettes meaning the old handle set didn’t need to be replaced. The door was rigorously tested in all positions and function was fully restored – keeping existing handle sets, euro cylinders and keys the same.
