Locksmith Repair: Repairing A Fuhr Multipoint Locking Mechanism - Pin Bolt Boxes

A customer contacted us in Falmouth with a faulty multi-point locking mechanism. A handyman had come out previously and sawn off one of the bolts to get the tenants back in when the door failed - leaving it functional but not fully secure. This is fine for the short term but needed to be rectified as soon as possible - unfortunately it had been left some time.

Failed Mechanism – A Broken Pin Bolt Box?

We attended the property in Falmouth, took the multi point locking mechanism out of the door and did an inspection. On first glance the obvious problem was the fact that one of the boxes (4 in total) had been cut down and thus didn't make any secure contact when locking the door.

But what was the cause for this bolt to stay in the locked position when the others retracted in the first place? All of the pin bolt boxes are linked together by the strap - on further inspection the box above it had broken, severing the link between itself and the bottom box. This meant that the other 3 could fire and retract but the bottom one was isolated and stuck in the locked position.

Two Fuhr Pin Bolt Boxes - One Broken and One Brand New

The Solution - 2 New Pin Bolt Boxes

So two new pin bolt boxes were needed to restore the multi point locking mechanism. Instead of replacing the entire unit, we replaced the damaged pin bolt boxes

- restoring the multi point locking mechanism back to maximum security.
