KEY TURNS BUT DOOR WON'T OPEN IN TRURO - COMMON CAUSES & FIXES

If your key turns in the lock but the door won’t open, the issue is usually caused by a failure inside the locking mechanism rather than the key itself. In most cases, the internal components of the lock are no longer engaging properly, even though the key still turns.

We see this issue regularly with multi-point locking systems, particularly on UPVC and composite doors.

We work in and around Truro every week and regularly deal with doors that won’t open due to internal lock failures.

WHY DOES THE KEY TURN BUT THE DOOR WON'T OPEN?

When the key turns but nothing happens, it usually points to a fault within the lock or door mechanism.

1 – Failed gearbox (most common cause)

The gearbox is the central part of most modern multi-point locking systems.

If this fails:

  • the key will still turn

  • but the internal mechanism won’t engage

This is one of the most frequent causes of this issue.

2 – Broken spindle or handle mechanism

The spindle connects your handle to the internal lock. If it breaks or becomes disconnected:

  • the handle may move normally

  • but the latch won’t retract

3 – Internal lock failure

Locks contain multiple moving parts that wear over time.

This can lead to:

  • components slipping or failing

  • cams not engaging

  • the mechanism no longer operating correctly

4 – Door alignment issues

If the door has dropped slightly or shifted, the locking points may not line up properly and the mechanism may not be releasing.

We can help you diagnose any door alignment issues quickly and confidently.

CAN YOU FIX THIS YOURSELF?

You can try opening the door and going through the usual locking procedure, if it works then you know there is an issue with the alignment.

  • Lift the handle slightly while turning the key

  • Apply gentle pressure (push/pull) on the door as you turn the key

  • Check if the handle feels loose or disconnected

Try to avoid forcing the key or handle, as this can cause further damage, including snapping the key or worsening the internal failure.

WHEN SHOULD YOU CALL A LOCKSMITH?

You’ll usually need a locksmith if:

  • the key turns freely but nothing happens

  • the handle doesn’t engage the latch

  • the door remains completely stuck

In most cases, this type of fault requires the lock to be opened, and the internal components repaired or replaced.
